Blesta SEO: what to index and what to hide

Blesta is billing software, not a website builder, so most of it should never appear in Google. But a few parts are public, and a careless setup can leave login pages, empty order steps and duplicate URLs competing with your real marketing pages. This Blesta SEO guide explains what to index, what to hide and how to make Blesta support your search rankings instead of diluting them. It’s the same approach we use in our WHMCS SEO guide, adapted for Blesta.

Why Blesta SEO Is Different

With most websites, SEO means getting more pages into Google. With Blesta it’s often the opposite. Most of Blesta is private: the staff area, the client area and the checkout. Those pages have no value to searchers, and if they get indexed they can show up for your brand name in place of your real homepage or plan pages. Good Blesta SEO is mostly about keeping the right things out, fixing duplicates, and making sure the few public parts are worth finding.

Keep Your Marketing Site and Blesta Separate

The pages that should rank, like your hosting plans, reseller plans, about page and blog, belong on your main website, usually WordPress. Blesta handles what happens after someone decides to buy. Install Blesta in a folder like /billing/ or on a subdomain like billing.example.com, and link to its order forms from your plan pages. That way Google sees one strong page per plan on your main site, instead of a thin order step in Blesta.

What to Index and What to Hide

Here’s the quick version. The staff area, client area and order forms stay out of Google. The portal page is optional, and a public knowledge base is worth indexing if it has real answers.

Blesta SEO index or hide table for the staff area, client area, order forms, portal and knowledge base

Step 1: Add a robots.txt for Blesta

The first Blesta SEO task is telling search engines where not to go. If Blesta is on its own subdomain, put a robots.txt in its root folder (Google’s robots.txt introduction explains the rules). If it’s in a folder on your main site, add these lines to your main site’s robots.txt instead, with the folder name in front. Adjust the paths to match your install:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /admin/
Disallow: /client/
Disallow: /order/

Support Manager’s knowledge base lives inside the client path, so if you want public articles indexed (Step 4), open the knowledge base in your browser, copy its path, and add an Allow: line for it above the Disallow: /client/ line.

Robots.txt stops crawling, but a page that’s already indexed can stay in results. If Google has already picked up Blesta pages, check them in Search Console and use the removals tool. Pages Google can’t crawl also can’t pass on their links, which is fine here.

Step 2: Fix Duplicate URLs

The same Blesta page can often load at several addresses: with and without www, over http and https, and with or without index.php in the path if URL rewriting isn’t on. Duplicates split signals between versions and are one of the most common Blesta SEO problems we see. Google’s guide to consolidating duplicate URLs covers the options in detail. Pick one version and redirect the others:

Blesta SEO duplicate URLs redirected to one HTTPS address
  • Force HTTPS for the whole install.
  • Choose www or non-www and redirect the other.
  • Make sure the .htaccess file that ships with Blesta is in place so pretty URLs work without index.php.
  • Check the hostname under Settings > System > Companies matches the version you chose, so emails and links use it.

Step 3: Make the Portal Page Worth Visiting (or Hide It)

Blesta’s Portal/CMS plugin controls the page at the root of your Blesta install (see the Blesta documentation for plugin details). Edit it under Settings > Company > Plugins, then Manage on the Portal plugin. If your main website already does the selling, keep the portal short and clearly branded, with links to log in, order and get support, and keep it out of the index. If Blesta is your website, give the portal a real heading, a clear description of what you sell and links to each plan.

Step 4: Put Your Knowledge Base to Work

If you use Support Manager’s knowledge base and make articles public, those articles can bring in search traffic. Write titles the way customers phrase questions (“How do I point my domain to my hosting?”), keep each article on one topic and link to related ones. If you’d rather keep all public content on your main site, publish guides there instead, the way we do with our Blesta guides. For most hosts, that’s the stronger Blesta SEO choice, because your main site already has the authority and the design to make articles rank.

Step 5: Link Plans to Order Forms, Not the Other Way Round

Every plan page on your main site should have a clear “Order” button that goes straight to the right Blesta order form. That keeps visitors moving and keeps ranking power on the plan page. Avoid linking from your main navigation to Blesta’s generic order page; link to the plan pages and let them do the selling. This one habit is the heart of good Blesta SEO.

Step 6: Don’t Forget Speed

Speed is part of Blesta SEO too. Order forms that load slowly lose sales, even if they’re not indexed. Keep PHP on a current version, use a host with LiteSpeed or good caching for your main site, and avoid loading heavy chat or tracking scripts on every Blesta page if you only need them on a few.

Step 7: Track What Search Visitors Do

Rankings only matter if they turn into orders. Add your analytics tag to Blesta’s order pages as well as your main site, so you can see which plan pages and search terms lead to sales. A small plugin using the Appcontroller.structure event can add the tag to every Blesta page without editing template files; our Blesta events guide explains how. If Blesta runs on a subdomain, set up cross-domain tracking so a visit from search to checkout counts as one journey, not two.

Blesta SEO When Blesta Is Your Whole Website

Some small hosts skip WordPress and use Blesta’s portal as their only website. That can work, but it changes the Blesta SEO rules. The portal page becomes your homepage, so give it a clear title, a short description of who you are and what you sell, and links to each plan. Use the knowledge base for helpful articles, since it’s your only place for content, and keep it public and indexable. As you grow, moving your selling pages to a proper website is usually the bigger win, because a content site gives you far more control over titles, layouts and articles.

Measuring Blesta SEO Results

Check Search Console once a month. The Pages report should show your plan pages and guides as indexed and Blesta’s private pages as blocked or excluded. The Performance report shows which searches bring visitors to your plan pages. Pair that with your analytics to see which of those visits become orders, and put more effort into the pages that sell.

Common Blesta SEO Mistakes

  • Letting the login page outrank your homepage. If a search for your brand shows “Log In” first, block the staff and client areas and request removal.
  • Duplicating plan descriptions. Copying the same text into Blesta package descriptions and your plan pages creates two weak pages instead of one strong one. Keep the full copy on your main site and a short summary in Blesta.
  • Blocking everything, including the knowledge base you wanted indexed. Test your robots.txt with Search Console’s robots.txt report after any change.
  • Forgetting the sitemap. Your main site’s sitemap should list your plan pages and guides, not Blesta’s private pages.
  • Mismatched branding. If Blesta looks nothing like your site, visitors from search may think they’ve left and bounce at checkout. Our client area customization guide shows how to match it.

A Quick Blesta SEO Checklist

  • Robots.txt blocks /admin/, /client/ and /order/, with an Allow line for any public knowledge base.
  • HTTPS is forced and one hostname is chosen.
  • Every plan has its own page on your main site with an Order button.
  • Analytics tracks orders back to the pages that brought them.
  • Search Console shows no Blesta login or order pages in the index.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Blesta be on a subdomain or a folder?

Either works. A folder like /billing/ keeps everything under one domain; a subdomain keeps Blesta’s files and robots.txt fully separate. The bigger factor is keeping your selling pages on your main site.

Will hiding Blesta from Google hurt my rankings?

No. Login screens and order steps don’t help rankings. Keeping them out of the index lets Google focus on the pages that should rank.

Does Blesta have built-in SEO settings?

Only a few, mostly through the Portal plugin and your template. Most Blesta SEO work happens outside Blesta: in robots.txt, server redirects, Search Console and your main website.

How long until changes show in Google?

Robots.txt and redirects take effect as soon as Google next crawls, often within days. Removing pages that are already indexed can take a few weeks unless you use the removals tool.
